How to plan a cloud migration without downtime

Cloud migrations fail when teams treat them as a lift-and-shift weekend project. The teams that succeed define cutover criteria early, rehearse rollback, and move traffic in controlled stages.

Start with an inventory of applications, data stores, identities, and network dependencies. Rank each workload by business criticality and migration complexity, then choose a pattern: rehost, replatform, or rebuild.

Run a pilot on a lower-risk service first. Validate observability, IAM, backups, and cost baselines before you touch revenue-critical systems.

For cutover day, use blue-green or canary releases, keep DNS TTL short in advance, and assign a single incident commander. After migration, schedule a hardening week for security baselines, autoscaling, and cost controls.
